Jon Favreau’s The Lion King dominated the weekend box office with a record-breaking $191.8 million opening in the US for a global total of $543.6 million.

Not only that, it is Disney’s biggest domestic launch for a PG-rated film, apart from the company’s other properties such as Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm. The reimagining of the 1994 animated classic has been lauded by critics and audience for its photorealistic CGI, diverse voice actors, and a faithful soundtrack to the original film as curated by music superstar herself Beyoncé, who also plays Nala in this new version.

These box office numbers are considered a win for Disney as it continues its initiative to adapt most of their classic animated films into live action.
