According to Geek Culture, an animated prequel series to Gremlins is officially in the works.

Gremlins is a 1984 comedy horror about cute little creatures that die if exposed to bright light, multiply when doused with water or turn into monster if fed after midnight.

Reports from TVLine say that Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will reveal how future shop owner Sam Wing met his furry friend Gizmo when he was 10 years old in Shanghai in the 1920s.

The synopsis reads:

“Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering – and sometimes battling – colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”

Writer of Once Upon a Time Tze Chun will be the screenwriter and will also act as executive producer alongside Daryl Frank (The Americans), Justin Falvey (The Haunting of Hill House), Sam Register (Batman: The Killing Joke) and Brendan Hay (The Daily Show).

The first season of the animated series will consist of 10 30-minute-long episodes and will be available to stream in the US on AT&T’s Warner Media streaming service when it launches in 2020.
