Why is Keanu returning for Matrix 4
To say that Keannu has been enjoying a resurgence or renaissance of sorts is an understatement.
His recent films like the John Wick franchise have collectively grossed more than $587 Million worldwide. In addition to that, he voiced the animated character, Duke Kaboom, last year for Toy Story 4, appeared as himself in the Netflix original comedy, Always Be My Maybe, and is playing the character of Johnny Silverhand in the upcoming video game, Cyberpunk 2077, to be released on PS 4, X-Box One, and Microsoft Windows.
Not bad for someone who’s 55 and whose career started in the 80’s.
But the one franchise that he has made such an imprint on for Geeks and lovers of science fiction, is and would still be known for is The Matrix. The franchise itself has generated $3 Billion in revenue and is certainly the stuff of dreams for indie and would-be filmmakers. And while talk of continuing the franchise was shot down by the creators themselves after the 3rd film back in 2003, it certainly came as a surprise to fans and cast alike that the journey into the Matrix will be revisited for a 4th film, as announced last year.
Keanu says that he decided to come back because Lana Wachowski, one of the two siblings responsible for the franchise’s success, wrote a script that was beautiful and something that he resonated with.
“That’s the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing,” Reeves said. “It’s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from.”
Reeves and fellow star Carrie-Anne Moss will be talking about the sequel in-depth in the upcoming June 11 edition of Empire Magazine for its Heroes Issue.
