Spielberg goes Horror

Whenever we hear the name Steven Spielberg, the genre of horror films is not one you would automatically associate him with. Although he was responsible for films that made our heart race like Jaws (1975), Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), and Jurassic Park (1993), for the most part, his films were mostly family oriented and ones that reflected good values that reminded us of how good life really is, if only we fully embraced it and accepted its rewards and vicissitudes.

These days the director has embraced the digital format of content consumption and has partnered with Quibi (short for Quick Bites), a new mobile video platform created by former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg and former HP CEO Meg Whitman.

Spielberg himself has already written around 5 to 6 episodes!

While all of this is exciting for fans of his work and mobile video viewers, Spielberg has requested that the show be made viewable only late at night! This means that the engineers at Quibi, would have to work some internal clock within the app for every subscriber who goes on the app in order to ensure “maximum scare effectivity”.

Quibi has reportedly raised $1 billion already from various investors with the promise of more funding to come. Spielberg’s After Dark is one of several shows planned for the initial lineup, which will also include eight “super premium” titles, along with 26 “lighthouse” (or prestige-style) TV shows. In total, Quibi will offer 125 weekly pieces of content.

Spielberg’s After Dark is expected to launch in April of 2020.
