Magic: The Gathering on NETFLIX

Netflix seems to be doing something right these days.

It has not only produced great content for couch potatoes to consume but also for shows like Lucifer, Arrested Development, Longmire, The Killing, Designated Survivor, among others to find a new home to continue what they have done in seasons past or just to find some greener pasture to graze and die a natural death by way of a final hoorah of a farewell season.

On top of that, it has also become a new home for shows that normally mainstream networks would pass up on and would not normally take a gamble on like Orange is the New Black, and my favorite, Castlevania.

But to say that Netflix’s record has been stellar and near perfect is overstating it and to do just that will just be us  Geeks being blind to the fact that it has cancelled Daredevil, Luke Cage, Defenders, Iron Fist and now Jessica Jones (about to air its 3rd and last season).

But if you liked the Warren Ellis produced Castlevania then you would most likely be stoked to know that Magic: The Gathering is coming to the streaming giant. This time it has managed to pull in the big guns as it will be adapted as a new animated series by the Russo Brothers of Endgame and Infinity War fame.

There have been previous attempts to bring Magic to movie theaters, but this will be the first time the franchise will be adapted for the screen in the franchise’s 25-year history, which started with the flagship card game involving battles between wizards called Planeswalkers. The Russos are tasked as executive producers of this planned series which will have them oversee the creation of a new storyline entirely but will also expand the history and stories of the Planeswalkers.

Accompanying the announcement was a teaser image that featured the popular character named Chandra Nalaar, who is a human Planeswalker from the world of Kaladesh and specializes in fire magic.

Along with the Russos, Henry Gilroy, the co-producer/writer of Star Wars: Rebels will co-write and be the showrunner for the series together with Jose Molina, who is known as a co-executive producer on other popular shows like The Tick, for Amazon and Marvel’s, Agent Carter.

Octopie Network and Canadian studio Bardel Studio will be tasked to handle the animation.

Isaac Krauss, who is the  CEO of Octopie, said that their “goal is to not only tell a compelling story leveraging Magic: The Gathering’s incredible body of work, but to also push the medium and perception of storytelling through animation. This series will cross the genres of suspenseful thriller, horror, and drama with deeply developed characters the likes of which are not often seen in animation.”

The Magic: The Gathering series joins a growing roster of adult-themed animation at Netflix, with traditional anime like Devilman Crybaby, Aggretsuko, and Ultraman living alongside Castlevania and the upcoming Pacific Rim and Altered Carbon series.
