Awkwafina makes history, wins in the Golden Globes

Awkwafina made history at the Golden Globe Awards 2020 as she accepts the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award for her outstanding performance in The Farewell on Sunday night (January 5).

The said actress is the first Asian woman to receive the award in this category, which is given to an actor who has given an outstanding performance in a leading role in a musical or comedy film.

The Farewell stars Awkwafina and directed by Lulu Wang. The movie is focused on a Chinese-American woman named Billi who travels to China to visit her terminally ill grandmother.

The movie also holds the record for best per-screen-average on its release last year, snatching the title from Avengers: Endgame.

“It’s truly an honor to be nominated for the EE Rising Star Award,” The actress said in a statement. “I’m grateful to BAFTA and the jury for the nomination and that I am able to share this recognition with so many other talented actors and actresses.”
