Alicia Keys took the stage Sunday night to pay tribute to Kobe Bryan.

“Earlier today, Los Angeles, America, and the whole wide world lost a hero. And we’re literally standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built.” She said in a somber voice.

“We never imagined in a million years we’d have to start the show like this,” she went on. “So we wanted to do something that could describe, a tiny bit, how we all feel right now.” She continued.

Boyz II Men then joined her on stage to sing a surprise performance of “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” in honor of Bryant.

According to Variety, Bryant and eight other passengers passed away on Sunday afternoon after his private helicopter crashed in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, her 13-year-old daughter Gianna (“Gigi”) is also included in the crash. The  helicopter was reportedly going to Gigi’s basketball game in Thousand Oaks.
