Philippines Overall Champion in SEA Games after 14 Years

After winning 149 gold, 117 silver and 121 bronze (a total of 387) medals in the recently concluded 30th Southeast Asian Games, Philippines has been declared the overall championship on Wednesday (December 11).

This is the second top finish of the Philippines in the history of the games. The first time the country was declared overall champion was back in 2005.

Grabbing the second place was Vietnam having won 98 gold, 85 silver and 104 medals, and is followed by Thailand (92-103-123), Indonesia (72-84-111), Malaysia (55-58-72) and Singapore (53-46-68).

William Ramirez, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman and SEA Games chef de mission, said in a statement, “we were all hoping and praying for this, but it is still a sweet surprise now that it is actually happening. I am so proud of our athletes. All of them deserve our respect and love.”

Yesterday, the 30th SEA Games held its closing ceremony at the Athletics Stadium in New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac. Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee chairman and House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano led the closing ceremony.

Also, during the ceremony, the Philippines turned over the hosting duties to Vietnam which will be conducted in 2021.
